Dig into deliciousness with the wilko Elephant Garlic Planting Cloves. Commonly known as the ‘wild leek’, Elephant garlic is an easy and rewarding herb to cultivate. This perennial plant produces large, papery-skinned bulbs that can grow up to 10-15 cm in diameter, each containing five or six huge cloves. It's a great choice for your kitchen garden or for adding a dramatic touch to your herbaceous borders. Compared to smaller garlic varieties, Elephant garlic has a milder and sweeter flavour, making it a versatile and unique ingredient in cooking. You can grate it raw for salads and dressings, slice it finely for stir-fries, or bake or roast it whole for an unusual vegetable or dip that can be spread on crusty bread or added to mashed potato. The cloves can be used fresh or dried for a more intense flavour. Native to Asia, Elephant garlic thrives in a sunny position with well-drained soil, although it can tolerate heavier soil. Its large broad blue-green leaves and sturdy flower stems will stand tall and proud in your vegetable garden or make a striking addition to a mixed border. The pinky-purple blooms appear in June and July but should be trimmed early so that the plant can concentrate its goodness in the swelling bulb.
