Product Information

  • Hardy shrub with large and sharp flavoured fruit
  • Produces white and pink spring blooms
  • Stunning fiery autumn foliage display
Brighten up your outdoor space with this Thompson and Morgan Fig Negronne Violette De Bourdea Plant Pot 2.5 to 3L. This particularly hardy fig thrives well in UK gardens and has a long history of reliable garden performance. Dating from around 1680, it was found to thrive in Versailles during the cold winter months and has been a popular variety ever since. The small purple-black fruits have impeccable flavour and produce a marvellous aroma during warm sunny days. Fig ‘Violette de Bordeaux’ produces two crops every year – the first arrives in summer and the second begins to develop shortly afterwards. The younger fruits ripen early the following year, particularly if protected from winter frosts. Grow fig trees in a sheltered, sunny position. A warm, south-facing site against a wall is ideal. Figs prefer a moisture-retentive, fertile, well-drained soil that is slightly alkaline. Prior to planting fig trees, incorporate plenty of well-rotted manure or garden compost into the planting hole. Figs have a vigorous growth habit but can be restricted by planting them in a container, which can then be submerged in the soil. When planting in containers, use a well-drained compost such as John Innes No.3. When growing fig trees in containers they should be repotted every two years. If figs are to be wall-trained, install support wires prior to planting. Water fig trees regularly, particularly during hot dry periods. Figs will not require much feeding except for a mulch of well-rotted manure or compost to the base of the plant in spring. Position: Full Sun Height: Up to 3m when fully established: Up to 4m when fully established. Supplied as 1 x Fig ‘Violette de Bordeaux’ or ‘Negronne’ bush in a 3 3-litre pot. Delivered with growing and care instructions. Images shown are for guidance only of the expected results from plants upon maturity. Different growing conditions might vary results. Image may be included for illustration of supply but can vary due to seasonality changes (e.g. deciduous plants lose leaves in colder months).
