Exclusion areas
Add the combined measurements of any areas you won’t be painting, like doors & windows
Number of coats
We recommend 2 coats for the best finish on most surfaces. This can vary by brand, surface texture, colour, or if you’ve used a primer
Add a 10% buffer
It’s better to be safe than sorry – having a little bit extra covers you for accidental spillages or mistakes
Paint coat quick guide
When painting an interior wall, several factors can influence the number of coats needed.
What increases the number of coats
- Painting on rough or textured surfaces like fresh drywall or plasterboard
- Using darker colours or painting over darker colours
- Matt finish usually requires more than gloss and silk to get an even finish
Tips for reducing the number of coats
- Rough or textured surfaces Increasing the amount of paint can compensate for extra absorption when painting on
- Stains or watermarks Use a primer or apply an additional coat to ensure proper coverage when painting over
- Darker colours: Purchase slightly more paint than calculated to account for potential additional coats
- Matt finish: Consider using a primer or applying an extra coat for even coverage.
