  • Vigorous climber, up to 6m tall and 4m spread

Kiwi 'Issai' is self-fertile, hardy and produces deliciously tasting kiwi fruits. The sweet egg shaped fruit can be harvested in August and September for a delicious freshly picked dessert. A spectacular climber in its own right with simple ovate leaves, while small clusters of cup-shaped flowers may appear in summer on female or hermaphrodite plants. The ideal choice if you only have space for one of these spectacular climbers in your fruit garden. Ideal For: Kitchen Garden, Walls And Fences Hardiness: Hardy Position In: Full Sun Height: Up to 6mSpread: Up to 4mKiwi 'Issai' plants are supplied in 9cmGrow kiwi plants in a sunny position in any fertile, well drained soil. A sheltered position is essential as kiwis are particularly sensitive to adverse weather conditions. Prior to planting, incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost into the planting hole. Plant kiwi vines, firm in and water well. Provide the twining stems with an appropriate support wires strung between sturdy posts, to train as an espalier. Feed and water regularly until fully established, particularly during hot dry periods. Train the stems onto their supports. In autumn apply a mulch of well rotted manure or compost to the base of the plant. Prune kiwi fruit plants in winter. In the first two years, prune plants to create an espalier framework of one permanent leading stem and two horizontal stems. Cut back the leading shoot to maintain it within the allotted space. Fruit is formed on the previous year's wood, and also on fruit spurs created by cutting back side shoots on horizontal stems to 3 or 4 buds.
