Product Information

  • Produces sweet deep-red fruits
  • Fan train against sunny walls
  • Prune lightly to protect in frost
Transform your space with this Thompson and Morgan Fig Brown Turkey Plant. A self-fertile fig produces large crops of sweet, juicy fruits with deep red flesh under the brown skins. With attractive lobed foliage, it makes a dramatic feature when fan-trained against a sunny wall or grown in a container on the patio. Fruits can take approximately one year to develop, they appear in spring and ripen from August to September. A second crop often develops in late summer and if protected, these fruits will ripen during the following summer. Grow in a sheltered, sunny position using moisture-retentive, fertile, well-drained soil that is slightly alkaline. Incorporate plenty of well-rotted manure or garden compost into the planting hole. When growing in containers they should be re-potted every two years. Water regularly, particularly during hot dry periods. Plants will not require much feeding except for a mulch of well-rotted manure or compost to the base of the plant in spring. In particularly cold areas container-grown plants can be moved to a frost-free position in winter to protect the developing fruits and fruit-bearing shoot tips from frost. Outdoors grow protected by wrapping them in a layer of straw and hessian in severe weather. In the following years, figs require little pruning except to remove any damaged or misplaced shoots to maintain the open framework. New shoots can be pinch pruned in summer back to 5 or 6 leaves to encourage fruit formation. Caution: The foliage and sap are harmful if eaten and may irritate the skin and eyes. Height: Up to 3m. Spread: Up to 4m. Position: Full Sun. Supplied in 9cm nursery pots Images shown are for guidance only of the expected results from plants upon maturity. Different growing conditions might vary results. Image may be included for illustration of supply, but can vary due to seasonality changes and may not be the exact variety.
