This excellent, self-fertile, mid-season variety produces rich-flavored fruit in abundance every August. Fully hardy, this compact shrub offers year-round interest with its elegant white flowers in spring and colourful foliage contrasting with red stems in winter. The Blueberry “Bluecrop” is ideal for smaller gardens or large pots on patios. Blueberries thrive in well-drained, acidic soil and should be planted in a sunny or semi-shaded area. In regions where acidic soil is not naturally available, grow blueberry plants in patio containers using a mix of ericaceous compost and John Innes No.3. If possible, water the blueberries with rainwater, as the lime in tap water can reduce soil acidity over time. Blueberries will begin to produce fruit in their third year. As the fruit develops, cover the plants with netting to protect the berries from birds. From their third year onward, prune the oldest stems each autumn to encourage new growth and maintain a healthy plant structure.
