Product Information

  • Produces early crops with heavy yields from July
  • Thrives in full sun
  • Grows and spreads up to 1.2m when fully established
Blackcurrant Ben Connan is a well-known and popular old favourite, showing excellent disease and mildew resistance and producing reliably heavy crops with minimal of fuss each year. This variety is slightly earlier to crop than many other blackcurrants, ripening from around July onwards, so it’s a great choice for extending the blackcurrant cropping season. Once established, which is normally after its second year, each plant can produce up to 3.5kg of fruit in one season! It’s long-lived too so you can expect a bountiful harvest annually for up to ten years. The fruit has an outstanding flavour and is delicious eaten fresh as well as cooked or used in preserves, pudding or juices. Blackcurrants prefer a position in full sun but will tolerate semi-shade. Shelter from cold winds and late spring frosts as these conditions may damage the flowers and reduce the yield of fruit later in the year. Grow blackcurrants in rich, moist, well-drained soil, incorporating plenty of well-rotted manure into the ground prior to planting. Plant blackcurrant bushes between late autumn and spring, at a distance of 1.5m apart and a depth of 5cm lower than the soil mark on the stem. Planting blackcurrants slightly deep will encourage the production of extra stems from below ground level. After planting, reduce the stems to two buds above ground level to promote sturdy new growth. Keep blackcurrant plants well watered during dry periods. Position: Full Sun Height: Up to 1.2m when fully established. Spread: Up to 1.2m when fully established. Supplied as Blackcurrant Ben Connan plant in a three-litre pot. Image may be included for illustration of supply but can vary due to seasonality changes (e.g. deciduous plants lose leaves in colder months).
