Decorate your patio and the front borders with the pretty semi-evergreen grass from Johnsons Stipa Tenuissima Grass Seeds. Known as Pony Tails for its fine, hair-like foliage, it waves in the slightest of breezes. It is a good source of winter food for seed-eating birds. Can be cut and dried to make indoor winter arrangements. Indoor sowing: January to March, in trays of seed compost. Sow thinly and cover lightly with a fine layer of compost. Firm gently and keep moist. Cover with glass, polythene or a propagator lid. Keep at approximately 20 degrees Celsius. Germination may be slow and erratic. Seedlings appear in 14 to 42 days. Remove the cover when seedlings appear. When large enough transplant small clumps to individual 7.5cm pots. Stand outside for a few days in late May (avoid frosts). Transplant 30cm apart in growing position. Keep moist and weed-free, especially in containers. Flowers July to October of the same year. Tip: Cut back in winter, mature plants can be divided in spring.
