Dining Tables

Shop dining tables by shape: round, rectangular, square, and oval

The shape of your dining table can completely change the look and feel of your room. Round dining tables suit smaller or squarer rooms; there are no corners to navigate, and they’re great for hosts as they naturally encourage conversation since everyone's roughly the same distance apart.

Rectangular dining tables are the most practical choice for longer or narrower rooms, and generally seat the most people for the amount of floor space used. Square dining tables sit somewhere in between, working well in square rooms or open-plan spaces where you want a table that doesn't dominate the room visually. Oval dining tables soften a rectangular footprint, useful if space is tight but you still want to seat a few more people than a round table comfortably allows.

Finding the right size dining table and chairs

A table for four will work well in a compact kitchen or dining nook, while six to eight seats would be better suited to a bigger dining room to avoid the space feeling cramped. If your seating needs change depending on the occasion, check out our extendable dining tables and folding tables; they let you keep a smaller footprint day-to-day and expand when you're hosting. Bar tables are also a versatile choice as they’re smaller than a typical dining room table and can be used as a breakfast bar, a stylish reading area, or a casual table for the kitchen.

Shop wood, glass, and metal dining tables

Wood dining tables remain the most popular choice; they're durable, great to look at, and suit most styles of room from traditional to modern. Glass dining tables make a smaller room feel more open, since the tabletop doesn't visually block the floor space behind it, though they show marks more easily and need more regular wiping down. Metal-framed tables, often paired with a wood or glass top, tend to have a more industrial or contemporary look and are generally very sturdy.

Dining Tables FAQs

What's the best dining table shape for a small room?

Round or oval tables generally work best in smaller rooms, since there are no corners to navigate and they make it easier to move around the space. A rectangular table can still work in a small room if it's narrow enough and positioned against a wall.

How much space should I leave around a dining table?

Aim for at least 90cm of clearance between the table edge and any wall or furniture, so chairs can be pulled back and people can walk past comfortably even when everyone's seated.

Is a glass or wood dining table easier to maintain?

Wood is generally more forgiving day-to-day; small scratches and marks are less noticeable, and it doesn't show fingerprints or dust the way glass does. Glass needs wiping down more regularly to stay looking its best, but it’s easy to clean when it does need it.

Can I buy a dining table without chairs?

Yes, our dining tables are sold separately from chairs, so you can mix and match styles or choose a table now and add chairs later.
