Also, it is a deciduous fern, so leaves die back in the winter before emerging again next spring. The Dryopteris erythrosora is a striking deciduous fern with triangular-shaped fronds which are copper-red when young and slowly mature to dark green. This plant grows approximately 40cm tall and 60cm wide. Lastly, the Athyrium niponicum var. pictum 'Ursula's Red' is a painted lady fern with rich purple-bronze tones. Its two-tone effect fades as the fronds mature - the purple tones diminish, and they become greener with a silver dusting. It approximately grows 40cm tall and 120cm wide and looks great in a large pot placed on a shady terrace.
