Product Information

  • Reaches up to 200cm in height when fully established
  • Suitable for full sun or semi-shade positions
Bring a burst of sunshine to your garden with the Thompson and Morgan Sweetcorn Golden Gate Seeds that deliver a super sweet flavour and satisfyingly crunchy texture, ideal for boiling or barbecuing on warm days. ‘Golden Gate’ sweetcorn thrives in cool or wet soils, making it a reliable choice for gardeners of all experience levels and offers long cobs up to 22cm for generous harvests. With easy sowing instructions and disease resistance, you’ll find this packet of 35 seeds perfect for allotments or borders where you want a rewarding, high-yield crop. Sow April to May. Sow seed four centimetres deep in 7.5cm pots of free-draining seed compost. Place in a propagator or seal container inside a polythene bag and place at a temperature of 18-20°C (64-68F) until germination, which takes seven to ten days. Do not exclude light, as this helps germination. It can also be sown directly outdoors once the soil has warmed. Sow two seeds, five centimetres deep, 23cm apart, and in rows about 45cm apart. Thin out to the strongest seedling. Gradually acclimatise to outdoor conditions for a few days before planting out after all risk of frost has passed. Water sweetcorn plants regularly until established, particularly during dry periods. Provide a thick mulch of organic matter around the base of the plants to help conserve moisture and reduce weed growth. Sweetcorn plants are shallow-rooted, so take care when hoeing to prevent root damage. Harvest sweetcorn cobs when the silky tassels at the end of the cob have turned brown. Peel back the sheath of the cob slightly and press the corn kernels with a fingernail until liquid squeezes out. If the liquid is milky coloured, then the cob is ripe; if clear, then it is under-ripe. Product Specifications: Position: Full sun, sun or semi shade. Height: Up to 200cm when fully established. Spread: Up to 45cm when fully established. Images shown are for guidance only of the expected results from plants upon maturity. Different growing conditions might vary the results.
