Product Information

  • Great specimen plant for large container or border
  • Dazzling flowers in late spring
  • Low maintenance and no pruning needed
What better way to welcome the summer each year than with a glowing display of yellow blooms! Also known as Lily tree, Magnolia ‘Yellow Bird’ is a real spectacle in spring when it puts on a fabulous show of lemon-yellow goblet-shaped flowers. Blooming just as the dark green leaves emerge, it’s a lovely contrast of green and gold which lights up the garden just as the season is gearing up for summer. Naturally growing into a medium-sized tree, it’s the perfect centrepiece for a sunny garden or partial shade where it will provide low-maintenance colour and structure year after year. If space is limited, it can easily be pruned and kept to the shape and size required. Plant magnolias in a sunny or semi shaded position with protection from cold winds and hard spring frosts. Magnolias prefer a rich, moist, well drained, acid to neutral soil. Incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost to improve the soil prior to planting, mixing it thoroughly and deeply. Magnolia plants establish quicker when their roots are shaded. Following planting, apply a mulch of rotted bark chips, manure or garden compost, taking care not to mound it around the stem of the plant. When growing magnolia in a patio container use a blend of ericaceous compost mixed with John Innes No. 3.
