Product Information

  • Red flowers attract pollinators
  • Produces long, smooth green pods
  • Ideal for freezing and exhibition
Runner Bean Scarlet Emperor consists of red flowers and smooth, green pods of 3037cm in length. They are brilliant for freezing and used for exhibition. Runner beans are known as a great source of Vitamin C, folate and iron and high levels of fibre. They can be grown with sweet peas to attract pollinating insects to the crop. Sow runner bean seed indoors from mid-April for transplanting later on, or direct sow outdoors from late May to July. Indoors, sow seed at a depth of 5cm 2 inches in 7.5cm 3inches pots or trays of free draining, seed sowing compost. Place in a propagator or seal container inside a plastic bag at a temperature of 1820C 6468F until germination which takes 710 days. Once germinated, grow runner beans in cooler conditions until all risk of frost has passed and runner bean plants are large enough to be transplanted. Gradually acclimatise them to outdoor conditions over 7 to 10 days before planting runner beans outdoors in rich fertile, well-drained soil in full sun or semi-shade with protection from strong winds. Water runner beans regularly, particularly as the flowers develop, and provide a liquid feed every 14 days during midsummer. Pinch out the tips of the beans when they reach the top of their supports. Beans can be harvested from July onwards. Pick the beans regularly and a little on the young side to ensure top quality and prolonged cropping. Culinary note: Suitable for freezing. Product Specifications: Hardiness: Half-hardy Position In: Full sun Height: Up to 300cm Spread: Up to 30cm Supplied as 1 packet of 50 seeds. Images shown are for guidance only of the expected results from plants upon maturity. Different growing conditions might vary results. Image may be included for illustration of supply but can vary due to seasonality changes e.g. deciduous plants lose leaves in colder months.
