Product Information

  • Early variety produces sweet pink stems from April
  • Supplied as 2 budded pieces for easy planting
  • Grows up to 60cm high and 1.2m spread when mature
Bring a burst of sweet pink stems early in the season with this Thompson & Morgan Rhubarb Rheum Champagne Budded Root Plant 2 Pack. These plants makes it a cherished choice for gardeners who love reliable crops and easy growing. Producing tender, delicious stalks perfect for forcing, you’ll enjoy vibrant harvests from April and again later as the stems deepen in colour yet stay just as tasty. With two budded pieces supplied, you can look forward to a dependable and much-loved variety that thrives in sunny spots, rewarding you year after year with minimal fuss. How to grow: Plant rhubarb from autumn to spring in a sunny position in well drained soil. Prepare the soil in advance by digging in plenty of well rotted manure and clearing all weeds. When planting budded pieces taken from mature rhubarb crowns, set them so that the top of the crown sits 3cm (1") below soil level and allow a spacing of 75cm (30") between plants. During the first year, resist the temptation to harvest the stems, in order to allow the plant to become properly established. In spring, remove the emerging flower heads as they appear. From the second year, stems can be harvested from April to June, when the leaves have fully unfurled. Pull from the base of each stem and twist them away from the crown. Harvest only a few stems at a time. Water rhubarb plants in summer during dry periods to prevent the soil from drying out. When the leaves die back in autumn, remove the old stalks and apply a mulch of well rotted manure around the crown. Caution: The leaves of rhubarb plants are toxic if eaten.
