Product Information

  • Features dense, prickly branches
  • Grows up to 3m tall and spreads up to 2.5m
  • Attracts bees and feeds wild birds
Pyracantha Red Column, commonly known as Firethorn, is a well-known and reliable hardy shrub which will thrive in just about any location. Forming dense, prickly branches, it’s ideal for use as hedging as well as for training against a wall where the evergreen foliage will provide year-round interest. This versatile, upright shrub can grow to a height of around 3m when left unpruned, but it’s also incredibly easy to keep it small as it responds very well to a hard prune. Its natural habit is tall and columnar, which is what makes this variety so well suited to growing against the house or as a free-standing shrub. But you can also use it to create an impenetrable and secure hedge. During spring, Pyracantha produces dense clusters of white flowers, which are a magnet for bees. These blooms then develop into beautiful, bright red berries, which not only provide wonderful autumn colour, but they’re also a valuable food for wild birds. Grow Pyracantha plants as free-standing shrubs or trained against walls and fences. Plant Pyracantha in any well-drained, reliably moist soil in sun or semi-shade. Choose a position with shelter from cold, drying winds. Feed and water Pyracantha plants regularly until fully established. Prune free-standing shrubs in early spring, removing damaged and poorly positioned shoots. For wall-trained shrubs, tie in main shoots to form part of the permanent framework, and cut back unwanted shoots to the main stem. Position: Full Sun/Partial Shade. Height: Up to 3m when fully established. Spread: Up to 2.5m when fully established. Images shown are for guidance only of the expected results from plants upon maturity. Different growing conditions might vary the results. Image may be included for illustration of supply, but can vary due to seasonality changes (e.g. deciduous plants lose leaves in colder months).
