Product Information

  • Features copper-red foliage
  • Grows and spreads up to 150cm when fully established
  • Produces white-pink flowers bloom
This modern, contemporary-looking shrub is for the rich, copper-red, architectural foliage. Almost by surprise, clusters of dainty white flowers with a hint of pink appear during early summer, giving contrast to the dark foliage. Glossy, red berries follow, persisting well into autumn. Thompson and Morgan Physocarpus Opulifolius Diable D’Or is a stunning addition to the shrub border. It looks particularly good partnered with a range of colourful foliage shrubs, such as Berberis, Elaeagnus and Euonymus. Plant Thompson and Morgan Physocarpus Diable D’Or in a fertile, moist, well-drained soil in full sun or semi-shade. Physocarpus plants prefer an acidic to neutral soil, but will tolerate more alkaline soils, although they may become chlorotic in very chalky areas. Incorporate organic matter such as well-rotted manure or compost into the soil prior to planting. Water regularly throughout the growing season until young Physocarpus plants are fully established. In spring, apply a mulch of well-rotted manure or compost to the base of the plant. After flowering, cut back the flowered shoots to a healthy pair of buds, unless seed heads are required for late-season interest. Physocarpus Opulifolius tolerates fairly hard pruning and may be cut back by half every few years to maintain a smaller size. On mature plants, cut back about one quarter to one fifth of the oldest shoots to their base, to promote strong new growth. Ideal For: Cottage Gardens, Specimen Plant Hardiness: Hardy Position In: Sun or Semi-Shade Height: Up to 150cm. Spread: Up to 150cm.
