Grow your own eye-catching heirloom chillies, which are as easy on the eye as they are on your palate! Chilli Pepper ‘Hungarian Black’ are tall, upright plants with purple-veined foliage and attractive purple flowers. Once pollinated, blooms are replaced by tapering peppers that ripen to an aubergine purple-black colour. The chillies are mild, with a superb flavour and only a slight kick of heat – use them raw or in cooking to create milder dishes or dry them for use later on in the year. Your plants will thrive in a conservatory, greenhouse or in a pot on a sunny patio. Chilli peppers may be grown undercover in a greenhouse or polytunnel or grown outdoors in a sheltered position in full sun. Pot up young plants and grow them on in warm frost-free conditions. When plants are well grown transplant them into grow bags and containers, or plant them in well prepared beds of fertile, well-drained soil. When growing chilli peppers outdoors, gradually acclimatise them to outdoor conditions over a period of 7 to 10 days prior to transplanting them.
