Plant herbaceous peonies at a depth of around 5cm below the soil surface. Planting too deeply may delay flowering. Water regularly until peony plants are fully established. Thereafter, herbaceous peonies require little maintenance and will grow happily for many years if left undisturbed. However, they will appreciate a mulch of well-rotted manure or garden compost applied around the base of the plant in spring.
