Direct outdoor sowing can be done at a depth of 1cm from late March to April in a well-prepared seedbed, allowing for later transplanting. Alternatively, leek seeds can be sown indoors from January to February at the same depth using free-draining seed sowing compost. Place them in a propagator or seal them in a plastic bag, maintaining a temperature of 10 to 15°C until germination, typically occurring within 14 to 21 days. Once germinated, grow the seedlings in cool conditions until all frost risks are eliminated. Regular watering is essential until fully established, after which watering is needed only during very dry periods. Hoeing between the rows is beneficial for weeding and bringing insect larvae to the surface. The leeks can be harvested from autumn onwards, standing resilient in the ground and lifted as required throughout the winter and spring.
