Lily Primrose Hill has spectacular white flowers with a lemon flash down the centre of each petal and ruffled lilac edges. This tall tree lily will create a breath-taking focal point planted en masse around the patio or at the back of a sunny border. Primrose Hill is easy to grow, needing little staking and providing fabulous scent and colour throughout July and August. Lilies can be cut for arrangements, but it is important to leave a third of the stem intact to feed the bulb for the following year. Plant into a sunny or partially shaded spot – Lilies prefer their roots in the shade and heads in the sun. Lily Primrose Hill thrives in moist, free draining acid to neutral soil that has been enriched with compost or well rotted manure. In containers, use a loam based compost such as John Innes No. 3. Lilies in containers should be divided and re-potted into fresh compost every other year. Plant bulbs 15cm apart at a depth of 3 times their height as deep planting helps to protect bulbs during hot weather. Feed and water plants regularly throughout the growing season. Deadhead faded flowers where they join the stem to prevent the development of seed pods. Reduce watering after flowering and move container plants to a frost-free position over winter. Lilies in the border can be left in place in mild areas providing the soil does not become too wet. In colder parts of the UK, lift, clean and store bulbs for the winter.
