This traditional holly tree variety, Ilex Aqui folium ‘Green Alaska’, has had its main stem pruned to form an attractive, formal standard shape, making it the ideal choice for growing in containers or mixed borders. It’s particularly useful for displaying by the front door or on the patio at Christmas when tight clusters of shiny red berries provide a traditional and colourful effect. This variety provides a year-round display of glossy, spiny green foliage which has been clipped into a dense ball shape. Supplied as a two-year-old plant, already up to 1m in height with a ball head diameter of around 2030cm, it brings an instant display of colour and structure to the garden. Holly ‘Green Alaska’ is a female variety and particularly good at smothering itself in shiny, bright red berries during winter, making it a colourful addition to Christmas wreaths and other decorations. This robust evergreen will continue to grow and is easily clipped to shape once or twice a year to maintain its neat, ball habit. Plant this holly tree in garden borders or large patio containers in any moist, well-drained garden soil or soil-based compost in full sun or semi-shade. Feed and water holly trees regularly until they are fully established. Prune young holly trees in summer, removing any damaged stems and trimming the remaining growth to shape.
