Product Information

  • Pack contains 400 seeds
  • Grows up to 45cm tall with 30cm spread
  • Offers mild flavour for culinary and traditional medicinal uses
Bring a peppery twist to your kitchen and garden with the Thompson and Morgan Herb Summer Savoury Seeds, an easy-to-grow herb that brings aromatic flavour to soups, seafood and more while doubling as a handy alternative to sage or thyme. Slender bronze-green leaves and pretty lilac flowers make it a lovely addition to herb beds, and you'll find it's reputed to help repel black flies when planted near broad beans. With a single packet offering around 400 seeds, you'll enjoy a generous supply for both culinary and medicinal uses, such as soothing bee stings or easing fevers, making summer savoury a brilliant choice for home cooks and gardeners alike. Sow Summer Savoury seeds from late winter to spring at 18-20°C (65-68F), in a good quality seed compost, at a depth of 1.5mm. Place in a propagator or seal the seed tray inside a polythene bag until after germination, which usually takes 14-21 days. Keep the compost damp but not wet. When seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them into 7.5cm pots and grow them on in cooler conditions until large enough to plant outdoors. When alyssum plants are well grown, and all risk of frost has passed, acclimatise them to outdoor conditions over seven to ten days. Transplant outdoors in full sun on any well-drained soil at a distance of 38cm apart. Grown next to broad beans, it is reputed to help repel black fly. Gather Summer Savoury when harvesting your broad beans and cook them together - it does wonders for the flavour. The secret is to have your Summer Savoury 15cm tall by early May to plant out amongst your beans! A light harvest of Summer Savoury can be made after about six weeks. Pick the leaves as and when required. For drying, Summer Savoury is best harvested in August. Product Specifications: Position in: full sun. Height: Up to 45cm. Spread: Up to 30cm. An image may be included to illustrate the supply, but it can vary with seasonal changes (e.g., deciduous plants lose leaves in colder months).
