This 100% purple-leaved basil variety is known for its vigorous growth and uniformity, featuring traditional cup-shaped leaves. This ornamental edible adds a vibrant touch to herb gardens and is perfect for growing in containers or baskets, either outdoors or indoors on windowsills. Basil seed can be sown from February to June or year-round for indoor cultivation. Start by placing seeds on the surface of free-draining seed compost, lightly covering them with a sprinkling of compost or vermiculite. Keep the seeds in a propagator at temperatures between 15 °C and 25°C (59°F and 77°F) or seal the container in a polythene bag until germination occurs, which usually takes 14-21 days. It's crucial to keep the compost slightly dry, watering very lightly as seedlings appear. When seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them into 7.5cm pots and continue growing them in cooler conditions.
