Nourish your soil naturally and give your garden a boost with these Thompson & Morgan Green Manure Buckwheat Seeds. Grow buckwheat as a short-term summer green manure, known for its rapid foliage growth that effectively suppresses weeds. This plant features deep roots that draw nutrients from beneath the soil, enhancing fertility. When allowed to flower, buckwheat attracts beneficial hoverflies, further supporting your vegetable patch or allotment. Its quick decomposition aids in forming excellent humus, contributing to improved soil structure and moisture retention. It is advisable to dig in the crop before the first harsh frosts. This packet contains 75g (2.5 oz) of seeds, sufficient for sowing in an area of 12 square meters (approximately 13 square yards). The ideal sowing period is from May to August, after all risk of frost has passed, particularly when the soil remains vacant for at least two months. Prepare the soil by roughly digging and removing any weeds, then lightly tread it before broadcasting the seeds and raking them in. Regular watering may be necessary in dry periods until the green manure becomes established. Buckwheat thrives in full sun, reaching heights of up to 75cm and spreading to about 25cm when fully established.
