Gardenia Crown Jewel is a beautiful, exotic-looking shrub with masses of double white flowers adorning the glossy foliage. Crown Jewel is a hardy variety of Gardenia, so it can be grown in the garden throughout the year in a sheltered border or on the patio in a container! Often planted for its heavenly fragrance, Gardenia Crown Jewel will add structure to borders throughout the winter and then burst into flower in July, filling the garden with its exotic white blooms and their intoxicating perfume. Plant in fertile, well-drained acid to neutral soil or in ericaceous compost in containers. Site in a sheltered spot in part shade or dappled sunlight. Water with rainwater if possible to avoid the lime in tap water reducing the acidity of the soil. Feed plants regularly with a balanced liquid feed in the growing season. Gardenia Crown Jewel only needs a light prune in spring to maintain an attractive shape. This variety of hardy Gardenia prefers some extra protection in particularly cold spells. In colder areas of the UK, plant in containers and move into a frost-free place over the winter.
