Plant Dryopteris in a sheltered spot. Choose a position in dappled shade on fertile, moist, acid or neutral soil. Dryopteris ferns prefer a soil that is rich in organic matter, so add some well-rotted manure or garden compost to the soil prior to planting. Feed and water ferns regularly until they are fully established. Apply mulch of well-rotted manure or garden compost around the crown of each plant in spring. Position: Full Sun.
