Product Information

  • Cactus dahlia tuber blooms with vibrant yellow spiked flowers
  • Easy to grow in borders or containers for long flowering season
  • Tubers edible and can be lifted and replanted each year
Brighten up borders and containers with Thompson & Morgan Dahlia Yellow Star Tuber 3 Pack that bring a burst of sunshine to any outdoor space, even on cloudy days. Cactus-style yellow flowers stand tall above lush green foliage, creating a striking display that lasts from summer right through autumn. You'll find planting and caring for these tubers simple, with easy-to-follow steps for both garden beds and pots. Pinching out tips encourages bushy growth and masses of flowers, while deadheading keeps the colour coming. Tubers can be lifted and stored after the first frost, ready to replant in spring for even bigger displays next year. All parts are edible, offering surprising flavours for adventurous cooks. How to grow: Plant dahlia tubers in April after all risk of frost has passed. Choose a sunny position in moist, well-drained soil. Prepare the soil by digging in plenty of well-rotted manure or compost. Plant tubers at a depth of 15cm (6”) and water well. Alternatively, starts tubers into growth in pots of compost in a frost free greenhouse. Transplant them into their final positions outdoors in June. Feed and water dahlias regularly throughout the growing season. While dahlia plants are still young, pinch out the growing tip of each stem to encourage bushier growth and masses for flowers. Deadhead faded dahlia flowers to encourage more blooms. Dahlia tubers may be lifted in autumn and stored over winter in trays of peat or sand, in a cool but frost free position if required. They can be potted up the following spring. Culinary note: All dahlia flowers and tubers are edible. The flavours and textures can vary greatly depending on the soil and conditions in which they were grown. Flavours range from water chestnut through to a spicy apple or even carrot.
