Product Information

  • Produces deep violet blooms with yellow centres
  • Grows up to 500cm tall and spreads up to 150cm
  • Perfect for fences, trees, and containers
Thompson and Morgan Clematis Étoile Violette bears a profusion of small, deep violet purple flowers, each with a contrasting boss of creamy yellow stamens from June to August. This vigorous clematis is at its best when scrambling among mature trees and shrubs, and its long stems and small flowers allow it to travel great distances without overpowering other plants. Pruning and maintenance couldn’t be easier either; simply cut back to ground level each year. When growing clematis, plant the climber deeply in moist, fertile, well-drained soil in a sunny or semi-shaded area and position the top of the root ball at a depth of 7.5cm below soil level, to encourage new shoots to form from the base of the plant. Clematis dislike soils that are particularly wet or dry; however, these soil types can be improved by the addition of plenty of well-rotted manure or garden compost. When growing Thompson and Morgan Clematis Étoile Violette in patio containers, use a soil-based compost. Train clematis plants onto a suitable support such as a trellis, wires or a freestanding climbing frame. Feed and water regularly throughout the growing season. Thompson and Morgan Clematis Étoile Violette flowers in late summer on the current year’s growth. Pruning of Group 3 clematis should be undertaken in spring, before active growth begins, by cutting back all of the previous year’s stems to a pair of healthy buds at around 20cm above ground level. Apply a mulch of well-rotted manure or garden compost to the base of the plant in spring in order to protect the roots and conserve soil moisture. Ideal For: Patios, Walls and Fences, Cottage Gardens. Hardiness: Hardy. Position In: Sun or Semi-Shade, Shade Height: Up to 500cm. Spread: Up to 150cm.
