Thompson and Morgan Clematis ‘Nelly Moser’ is one of the most recognizable varieties, featuring large, pale pink petals adorned with a distinctive deep pink central stripe and contrasting red anthers. The wide blooms are followed by attractive seed heads that extend the elegant display well into late summer. When growing ‘Nelly Moser’, choose a sunny or semi-shaded area and plant the climber deeply in moist, fertile, well-drained soil. Position the root ball at a depth of 7.5 cm (3 inches) below soil level to encourage the formation of new shoots from the base of the plant. Clematis plants prefer soils that are neither overly wet nor too dry; you can improve these conditions by adding plenty of well-rotted manure or garden compost. This variety is particularly well-suited for north-facing positions, as its flowers tend to fade when exposed to full sun. If planting in patio containers, use soil-based compost. Be sure to train the clematis onto a suitable support, such as a trellis, wires, or a freestanding climbing frame. Regular feeding and watering throughout the growing season are essential.
