Go for the crispness and sweetness with the Thompson & Morgan Carrot Adelaide F1 Hybrid Seeds. The early-maturing variety of carrot, ‘Adelaide’, is a favourite among gardeners due to its ease of growth, speed, and irresistible sweet flavour combined with a crunchy texture. With carrots expected to thrive from late January to early November, this variety produces vibrant golden orange roots, making it excellent for cloches and cold frames. For optimum results, sow carrot seeds directly outdoors in a sunny, weed-free space with fertile, light, and well-drained soil. Since carrots are sensitive to freshly manured soils, it is advisable to prepare seed beds in the autumn well ahead of spring sowing. Seeds should be sown thinly at a depth of 1cm in drills 30cm apart, with germination taking about 10 to 20 days. Once seedlings are manageable, thin them to 5cm apart. Carrots can also be grown in containers when space is limited. To encourage germination, ensure they are well-watered but reduce watering to maintain soil moisture after germination, as excessive water may promote leaf growth at the expense of the roots. Earthed up the roots during growth can prevent the development of green crowns.
