Product Information

  • Pack contains 300 seeds
  • Compact rows allow sowing at just 20cm apart
  • Bolting resistance ensures reliable spring or summer cabbage harvests
Discover how cabbage plants thrive even in compact spaces with these Thompson and Morgan Cabbage April Seeds, which are perfect for early sowing in gardens. Cabbage ‘April 1’ stands out for its ability to resist bolting, a common issue with autumn-sown types, so you'll enjoy reliable crops whether you sow in spring for summer harvest or later for overwintering. With a recommended spacing as close as 20cm, these seeds let you maximise allotment space, and companion planting with nasturtiums and mint helps keep pests at bay. You'll receive a packet with 300 seeds, complete growing instructions and the promise of crisp, healthy cabbages ready for your table. Sow spring cabbage indoors from March to May for Summer harvesting or from July to August to overwinter for a spring harvest. Alternatively, direct sow outdoors into a well-prepared seedbed, for transplanting to their final positions later on. Sow at a depth of 13mm and a distance of 23cm between rows. Indoors, sow seed at a depth of 12mm in trays of free-draining, seed sowing compost and cover with a layer of vermiculite. Place in a propagator or seal container inside a plastic bag at a temperature of 20-25°C (68-77F) until germination, which takes four to seven days. Once germinated, grow Cabbage plants on in cooler conditions until all risk of frost has passed and plants are large enough to be transplanted with two to three true leaves. Gradually acclimatise them to outdoor conditions over seven to ten days before planting cabbage in moist, rich, well-drained soil in full sun. A fertile soil is essential as cabbage requires high levels of nitrogen. Product Specifications: Hardy Annual. Position: full sun. Height: 30cm. Spread: 40cm. Delivered with growing and care instructions. Images shown are for guidance only of the expected results from plants upon maturity. Different growing conditions might vary the results. An image may be included to illustrate the supply, but it can vary with seasonal changes (e.g., deciduous plants lose leaves in colder months).
