Brussels Sprout plants 'Crispus' F1 are the latest clubroot resistant hybrid variety to plant in the spring for an autumn harvest. 'Crispus' has excellent standing ability, good vigour and a wonderful flavour – a 'must have' variety for the kitchen garden or allotment. Plants produce smooth, dark green buttons of excellent quality, which hold on the stalk well and stay in good condition over a long period. Companion planting: try growing Brussels sprouts with Nasturtiums to draw cabbage white butterflies away from your crop, and mint to help deter flea beetles. Pot up plug plants and grow them on in warm, frost free conditions until plants are well grown and all risk of frost has passed. Gradually acclimatise them to outdoor conditions over 7 - 10 days before planting Brussels Sprout plants outdoors in firm, rich fertile, well-drained soil in full sun. Prepare the soil in advance in early spring by adding plenty of well-rotted farmyard manure to the soil to improve its structure and fertility. Plant brassicas at a distance of 60cm (24 ) apart and cover with a protective netting or fleece to prevent attack from birds and insects. Water the plants thoroughly after planting.
