Embark on your gardening adventure now with the Thompson and Morgan Broad Bean De Monica Seeds. It offers the advantage of an early harvest, being the earliest maturing broad bean variety from spring sowing, allowing for harvesting concurrently with winter-sown beans. Known for its high yields, this variety produces lovely pods measuring 15cm, each containing 4 to 5 seeds. Broad Bean De Monica features a robust root system and an upright growth habit, producing 2 to 3 stems per plant. To cultivate, directly sow the seeds under cloches in February or without protection from March to April. For particularly early yields, this variety can also be sown outdoors under cloches from early autumn to late winter. These beans thrive in full sun on rich, well-manured soil, with a requirement for protection against strong winds. Plant them in double rows spaced 23cm apart, with at least 60cm between each double row. Sow at a depth of 5cm and a distance of 23cm apart within each row, ensuring to water well. Germination usually takes around 10 days. As the plants grow, support them with canes or stout sticks at each corner of the double row, tying them in with string, especially in windy areas. Consistent watering is crucial, particularly as flowers start to form. Regular hoeing between rows will aid growth. Pinch out the growing tips after the initial flowers have set pods to mitigate blackfly and facilitate further pod development. Harvest the pods when they are well-filled, and the seeds remain soft. The pack contains approximately 40 seeds.
