Not many plants can match azaleas for colour and durability in the garden. These dwarf azaleas are fantastic hardy, evergreen shrubs providing bright vibrant colour during the springtime, which is when they become simply smothered with blooms, often partly obscuring the foliage. Slow growing and compact they make excellent low maintenance specimens for acid borders and patio containers or pots using ericaceous compost. With a combination of glossy, evergreen foliage and spectacular spring flowers, these azaleas will give you year-round interest in the garden. Grow in moist, well-drained, acid soil that has been enriched with plenty of well-rotted organic matter. Choose a position in semi or dappled shade with shelter from cold drying winds. Many azaleas can cope with a sunny position provided that the soil remains reliably moist. Where soil conditions are alkaline, best to grow in patio containers or pots, using a mix of ericaceous compost and a soil-based compost such as John Innes No. 3. It is important to avoid planting them too deeply. Water regularly throughout the growing season. Where possible, use rainwater as the lime contained in tap water will reduce the acidity in the soil over time. Feed in spring with a slow-release fertiliser for acid-loving plants. Protect plants from cold winter winds. Border-grown plants will appreciate autumn mulch to protect their shallow roots from winter cold.
