- Vibrant summer blooms in mixed colours
- Attracts bees and butterflies
- Easy-care, garden-ready plants
Achillea is a stunning mix of pastel shades that creates a vibrant tapestry of colour throughout the summer months. The sweet-scented foliage and flat flower heads of this hardy perennial are ideal for cottage garden schemes or for adding to fresh-cut flower arrangements. Achillea is a low-maintenance plant that is loved by bees, butterflies, and other pollinating insects. It grows to a height and spread of 60cm (24in) and has culinary uses—its leaves can be eaten cooked or raw. They have a bitter flavour and are excellent in mixed salads, particularly when young. These leaves can also serve as a preservative or flavouring for beer, and both the flowers and leaves can be steeped to make aromatic tea. Plant Achillea in well-drained soil and full sun, as it dislikes wet conditions, especially in winter. To improve heavy soil, add coarse grit or sharp sand before planting. Once established, Yarrow is reasonably drought-tolerant and requires minimal maintenance. In the summer, stake the tall flower stems with garden canes to prevent them from drooping. Leave the faded flower heads intact at the end of summer for an attractive autumn seed head display. When the first frosts blacken the stems, cut them back to ground level. Overcrowded clumps of yarrow should be lifted and divided in spring. Note: Achillea can irritate the skin and eyes. Images are for guidance only and represent expected results upon maturity. Actual results may vary based on different growing conditions. Images may be included to illustrate supply, but they can change due to seasonal variations, such as deciduous plants losing leaves in colder months.
