Acer palmatum is a small, slow-growing deciduous tree that is known for its iconic autumn red and green lobed foliage. They are compact and extremely slow-growing growing making these extremely easy to maintain and ideal for growing in small gardens and containers. The compact, rounded habit that is seen by these varieties allows a canopy of colour to form. The foliage also undergoes a transformation from spring to summer and into autumn, then shedding leaves in the winter months, only for it to come back with a vengeance in spring, bursting with colour. The two varieties are perfect for growing as stand-alone specimen plants; however, they can also be used to form a Japanese-themed feature in borders or for planting under larger trees where sunlight may not always be able to reach. Acer palmatum Atropurpureum- A classic Japanese Maple producing gorgeous, purple-red foliage that colours to brilliant, fiery red in autumn. Acer palmatum Osakazuki - This striking variety is well regarded for its intense autumn colours. Grow in any moist, fertile, well-drained soil in sun or dappled shade, with shelter from strong winds which can scorch the finely cut leaves. Alternatively, plant in large containers or pots using a soil-based compost. Water regularly throughout the growing season until well established. Protect plants from strong winds. Acers require little pruning other than to maintain their shape. Lightly trim stems if necessary from late autumn to midwinter. Position: Sun, Semi Shade, Dappled Shade. Height: Up to 4m.
