- Features glossy semi-evergreen foliage with fragrant flowers
- Grows up to 3m tall and spreads up to 4m
- Thrives in full sun
Abelia is an under-used shrub in the garden, but one that can give months of interest, colour and scent. The semi-evergreen plants have a robust, arching habit and give excellent autumn interest thanks to the fragrant flowers, borne in clusters. Abelia enjoys a warmer climate and will perform extremely well in dry, sunny borders. Abelia can be clipped into a hedge easily, and the neat, reasonably compact plants have glossy foliage, which stays on the plant for most of the year, providing seasonal interest. Plants will be most hardy when grown by a sheltered wall, adding protection from harsh weather conditions and aiding growth. Abelia x grandiflora prefers to be planted in garden borders in any fertile, well-drained garden soil. Alternatively, grow in patio containers using soil-based compost. Position in full sun, feed and water regularly until established. To prolong the flowering season, deadhead any fading flowers. During the winter months, protect the roots of the plants with the use of horticultural fleece or with the addition of a bark mulch. Take care not to mound mulch up against the main stem. In late spring, trim lightly and remove any shoots which spoil the symmetry of the plant. Position: Full Sun. Height: Up to 3m. Spread: Up to 4m.
