5 ways to save water around the home

1. Put your dryer water to good use

If you have a condenser dryer, the water that collects in the reservoir can be used for loads of cleaning tasks around the home – don’t throw it away!

As it’s technically distilled, your dryer water is perfectly safe to use, but not to drink. Here are some ways of recycling it:

  • Fill your steam iron with it: it’ll be better for the machine than tap water.
  • Use it to clean your floors: simply fill a bucket with your excess dryer water and a floor cleaner for sparkling floors, no tap required.
  • Water the plants: dump the water around the roots of plants in your garden for a cheaper alternative to getting the hose out.

2. Only fill your kettle as much as you need

Who doesn’t love popping the kettle on? If you’re in the habit of overfilling the kettle to make one or two cuppas, you’re pretty much throwing money down the drain every time you dump out the excess to boil it again next time.

Get to know your kettle and only fill it up as much as you need. Not only will you save water, but the kettle will boil that much faster if there’s less water in it.

3. Only wash full loads in the washing machine

Unless your washing machine is particularly fancy, it’ll use the same amount of water for a half load as it does for a full one, so it’s best to wait until you have enough laundry for a full load.

If you do need to pop a smaller wash on, whether it’s baby stuff, dirty sports clothes, or you’ve run out of socks, embrace the shorter wash cycle on your machine. With modern detergents, they’re effective at shorter cycles and lower temperatures, helping you save money in more ways than one!

This isn’t just the case for washing machines; the same applies to your dishwasher. Fill it up properly before turning it on. And don’t worry – dishwashers actually use less water than it would take to properly wash up the same amount of stuff, so don’t feel guilty about using it.

4. Take shorter showers

Cutting down your shower time by even a minute or two can help to save water, but how long is a shower meant to be? Well, most sources recommend that a four-minute shower is enough to get you clean and ready to tackle the day. So, instead of timing your showers (because who has the patience for that first thing in the morning?), why not put together a playlist of your favourite four-minute songs? There are plenty out there to choose from! Pop one on when you hop in the shower and aim to get out before the song ends, once you’re done singing your heart out.

It goes without saying that showers use less water than baths, so save these for a treat instead of a daily occurrence.

5. Turn off the faucet when brushing your teeth

This is especially useful if you’ve got young kids. Encouraging everyone to turn the tap off until it’s time to rinse will help to save water over time. Getting them in the habit early will make it a much easier rule to stick to!
