Strawberry ‘Honeoye’ is one of the leading commercial varieties, grown for its fantastic mid-season crop of firm, bright red and well-flavoured fruits which are ready to pick from June to early July. This reliable strawberry variety has excellent disease resistance, producing a rewarding summer crop of tasty fruit which can be picked and enjoyed fresh as well as made into wonderful jams and sauces. Also suitable for freezing to use in puddings later in the year. Well suited to growing in containers on the patio as well as in rows on the allotment. Plant strawberry plants in autumn or late spring in a sheltered, sunny position in well manured, free draining soil. Plant strawberry runners every 45cm (18") in rows spaced at 75cm (30") apart. Spread out their roots and place them in the soil at a level where the crown of the plant is just poking above the surface. Avoid planting them too deeply as this may cause them to rot. Alternatively try growing strawberry plants in hanging baskets or in specially designed strawberry planters for the patio. Water strawberries frequently throughout the growing season and weed regularly between rows. When growing strawberry plants in baskets and containers, they will also need feeding every two weeks.
