So many festive family moments centre around the kitchen. From making vats of hot chocolate to festive baking with the kids, as well as Christmas morning cuppas and – of course – cooking the Christmas dinner, it all starts here.
Thankfully, creating a warm Christmas atmosphere in the kitchen doesn’t require big spending. We’ve got plenty of budget Christmas décor ideas to give your kitchen an extra-festive lift, and a couple of select decorations here and there will give it some seasonal spark without being intrusive.
Blending your décor with the festive food traditions you know and love is the perfect recipe for a cosy Christmas kitchen.
Set the mood with cracking Christmas décor
Remember: your kitchen is a busy place, so less is more when it comes to decorating it. Don’t hang anything near the oven or appliances (it’s a health & safety nightmare) and keep areas clear that are prone to getting dirty. Here are some cosy Christmas kitchen ideas to get you started!
Warming lights
- Pop some string lights along the top of your cupboards or window frames
- Lanterns and candles (either real or LED) or decorative lights look great on empty shelves or windowsills
Touchy-feely textiles for a cosy vibe
- Plaid tea towels and oven mitts are great all year round, but are especially nice at Christmas. Or go all out and get festive-themed ones!
- A seasonal table runner is a lovely touch on a breakfast bar or dining room table
Bring the outside in with natural touches
- Pine branches, holly and cinnamon give a rustic look to your Christmas decorations – and cinnamon smells great too!
- There are loads more ideas like this in our guide to DIY Christmas decorations
Wreaths & garlands
- Miniature versions of these look great above cabinets, lining shelves, or wrapped around barstools
Foodie traditions to keep your kitchen Christmassy
It’s all very well looking nice, but your kitchen is there to make festive treats! Here are some of the cosy holiday food and drink that we look forward to all the way from January.
Festive baking
There’s no family kitchen tradition quite like baking. It’s so easy to get everyone involved, and the result is always a treat! Pick up some simple recipes for Christmas cookies or gingerbread – the kids will love getting stuck in – it’s the perfect excuse to have some quality time in the kitchen.
Hot chocolate
Is there anything better on a cold day? If you want to make it extra-special, or if you’re expecting guests, you can set up a hot chocolate station in your kitchen! Simply make a batch of hot chocolate in the slow cooker so it keeps warm, and set out small bowls of whipped cream, chocolate chips, sprinkles and ground cinnamon so everyone can create their own cup. Don’t forget the Christmas mugs!
Make the most of the slow cooker
There’s more to it than hot chocolate! Keep your slow cooker out and use it for your Christmas parties – it’s the perfect place to keep mulled wine or spiced mulled cider warm, and everyone can help themselves. This has the added benefit of filling your kitchen with festive scents, so it’s a win-win.
Christmas food to prep ahead
The season’s busy enough – using quiet times in the home to get ahead on things will make your Christmas so much easier, and more fun! Not only this, but festive foods like homemade granola, spiced nuts, or our brilliant Christmas bake jars make wonderful budget Christmas décor for your kitchen.
More cosy, less clutter
Keeping your kitchen organised not only makes it look better, but you’ll find it much easier to work in during this very busy time of year. And it’ll be safer too!
Make sure your counters are clear – or making room for festive baking becomes a whole lot harder. You can make extra room in your cupboards with some handy stackable storage, or even look at a kitchen trolley if you’ve run out of space.
Once you’ve cleared the counters, you can easily use seasonal-themed trays or baskets to make organised zones on your countertops, keeping all your hot chocolate supplies in one place, or festive snacks to keep you going.
Christmas kitchen styling can be as easy as swapping out everyday essentials with festive versions! Things like mugs, tea towels and dinner sets are all available in delightfully Christmassy designs, and can add some festive sparkle to everything from breakfast through to dinner.
As much as we love the smell of freshly baked mince pies, it’s a little impractical to bake them every day to make your home smell good. So, grab yourself a festive diffuser for your kitchen! Pop one out of the way on a windowsill or on top of the fridge, and keep the scents subtle so as not to overwhelm the room.
Get the family involved
Like most things at Christmastime, styling your kitchen is even better when you have company. Why not get the kids involved with choosing the décor or, even better, get them to create their own!
The kitchen is where the heart is, so make sure you get plenty of use out of it with weekly bake nights and hot chocolate evenings.
Making your dream cosy Christmas kitchen doesn’t have to use a lot of time or money. A couple of small touches here and there will make a world of difference to the home of festive food and drink!
