What's the difference between ambient, task and accent lighting?

Ambient lighting is your main, general light source, usually a ceiling light. Task lighting is focused and brighter, for jobs like cooking, reading or working at a desk lamp. Accent lighting is decorative, used to highlight a feature or add atmosphere rather than to light the whole room.

How many lumens do I need for a room?

As a rough guide, living rooms and bedrooms need less brightness than kitchens and bathrooms, where you're doing more detailed tasks. Check the lumen output on the packaging rather than relying on wattage, since LED bulbs use far fewer watts for the same brightness as older bulbs.

Can I fit lighting myself, or do I need an electrician?

Swapping a lamp or fitting a new shade is straightforward. Anything involving new wiring or ceiling roses, especially in bathrooms, should be done by a qualified electrician to stay within UK wiring regulations - and avoid any danger!
