Happy spuds mean happy gardens, giving you bountiful harvests throughout the growing season. We have seed potatoes for every stage of the potato growing season. First earlies are sown early spring and are the first potatoes to be harvested, with small and tender spuds for sumptuous salads. Second earlies are planted slightly later around April, and are slightly larger. Main crop potatoes, as the name suggests, are sown in late Spring and are harvested in late summer as your standard all-purpose spuds which can be stored over winter.

Planting Potato Seeds and Care Tips

Potatoes like a loose, well-drained soil, but you can use potatoes to sort out compacted soil too as they aren’t easy to stop! Mix in some compost to enrich the soil before planting. Follow the instructions on the packet in terms of when to plant your spuds. Seed potatoes work equally well in the ground in raised beds, plant pots, or containers; just make sure they’re deep enough to fit those delicious potatoes when they grow! Plant your seed potatoes, sprouts facing up, about 10cm deep and 30cm apart. Potatoes need room to grow! Give the seed potatoes a good watering and keep the soil moist, but not waterlogged. Once your potato plants have flowered and the leaves start to turn yellow, it’s time to harvest: gently work up the soil with a garden fork and leave the potatoes on top of the soil to cure a little before storing ready for use. Water your potatoes regularly in dry weather, keeping the soil moist but not swimming. This is especially important during flowering, as this is when those wonderful spuds are forming beneath the surface!

What can I do to prevent potato disease?

Crop rotation is key. Many root-bound pests tend to hang around in the soil over winter, so you risk the chance of disease if you plant potatoes in the same spot 2 years running. It isn’t just potatoes that benefit from crop rotation; most root veg will also benefit.

How do I harvest and store my potatoes?

Gently fork the soil to reveal your special spuds once the plants have flowered and the leaves start to turn yellow. Leave them on top of the soil for a day or 2 to cure before moving them to a cool, dark area for storage.
