How much top soil do I need?

For general gardening, 15-20cm is plenty for most planting needs. If your flowerbeds are a little neglected, or you’re planting anything with deeper taproots like potatoes or carrots, you may want to boost to 30-40cm. To calculate how much top soil you need, measure the area you need to cover in metres and multiply by the depth you need – this will give you your top soil needs in cubic metres.
