What types of BBQ charcoal are available?

The 2 main types of charcoal are lumpwood and briquettes. Lumpwood burns hotter and produces less ash, good for high heats, whilst briquettes burn for longer and are good for longer feeding frenzies – ideal if you’re feeding a crowd.

How much charcoal should I use for grilling?

For direct grilling of steaks and burgers, a single layer of charcoal across the bottom of the grill should do it. For indirect grilling of more delicate ingredients, create a ‘hot spot’ with charcoal towards the edge of the grill and cook your ingredients on the opposite side for a slower cook.

How do I light charcoal without lighter fluid?

Lighter fluid is smelly, quite dangerous, and not very good for the environment. A chimney starter is a fantastic tool to have if you’re planning on using the BBQ this summer, and can easily light enough charcoal for your grill with almost no effort. Alternatively, grab some natural firestarters or straw bundles for eco-friendly fire lighting.

When is charcoal ready for cooking?

Patience is key: wait until your charcoal has a white/grey ash around it and the flames have died down, which will give you the perfect grilling temperature without the risk of fire damage.

How can I control the temperature of my charcoal grill?

Having your charcoal towards one side of the grill gives you more control over your cooking by having direct and indirect heat zones. Many models of kettle BBQs will also have vents which you can close if you want to slow things down a little. To increase the heat, simply open the vents and let the oxygen flow again for a burst of heat.
