School Bags

Shop school backpacks and rucksacks

Backpack or rucksack? Whatever you call it, the right size depends on the age and school. Younger kids generally need a smaller, lighter bag with adjustable straps, while secondary school students need more room for bulky books and folders, so look for multiple compartments to keep things organised rather than one large open space.

A separate PE or gym bag keeps sports kit away from books and stationery, and makes it easier for kids to grab exactly what they need without unpacking their whole school bag. Look for a bag with a wipe-clean or water-resistant lining - after all, trainers and kit never seem to stay as clean as we'd like!

Shop durable school bags built for daily use

As mentioned earlier, a school bag takes a daily beating, so keep an eye out for sturdy zips and padded straps if it's going to be carrying a heavy load of books. A water-resistant fabric is also worth having, since school bags rarely stay indoors on a rainy day.

School Bags FAQs

What school bag does my child need?

In terms of size, as a general guide, younger primary school children need a smaller bag around 30-35cm high, while secondary school students need a larger bag, often 40cm or more, to fit A4 folders and textbooks without bending them. You’ll also want to keep all-day comfort in mind when choosing a bag - consider bag weight, organisational features, and spacious designs.

Are school bags machine washable?

Most fabric backpacks and rucksacks can be spot-cleaned or hand washed, but always check the care label first; some padded straps or reinforced bases aren't suitable for a full machine wash.
