Extremely nutritious and equally versatile, the Johnsons Seeds Kale Ethiopian Amara is a must for any vegetable garden. It is also known as Texsel Greens or Garlic Kale for its flavour and is an excellent source of vitamins A and C. You can use them raw as baby leaves or cooked when mature. Outdoor sowing: April to June for mature plants and September for baby leaves. In a prepared seed bed. Sow thinly in rows 30cm apart. Cover lightly with fine soil. Firm gently and keep moist. Seedlings appear in 7-21 days. When 5-6 leaves are formed, transplant them to the final position 45cm apart for mature plants. Firm plants well and keep them moist. For cut, and come again baby leaves, thin to 10cm apart. Cut when approx. 7.5cm tall, they will regrow for 3-4 cuts. Repeat sow regularly. Harvest June to December for baby leaves or September to March for mature plants. Indoor sowing: March to May (to harvest as mature plants) in trays of moist compost. Sow thinly, cover with a fine layer of compost and firm gently. Keep at approx. 15°C and keep moist. Acclimatise to outside conditions. Transplant to final position 45cm apart, firm in well, and keep moist. Harvest September to March. Pick a few leaves from each plant. TIP: Very hardy, winter frost will sweeten and intensify the flavour.
