Benefits of Lawn Scarifiers

Using a scarifier is a vital part of maintaining a happy and healthy lawn, and an important step in transforming a sad looking lawn into luscious green grass! A lawn scarifier removes dead grass, moss and debris from the surface of your lawn, also known as ‘thatch’. Over time, this can build up and suffocate your lawn, which is a great excuse to embrace the power of a scarifier. Removing thatch improves the airflow around your soil, letting it absorb moisture and nutrients much easier and stimulating some powerful grass root growth to really kickstart your season!

If you’re battling brown and sad looking grass or patchy lawns, a scarifier can really help to tidy it up and encourage a transformation in your garden. Choose from electric scarifiers for medium-sized lawns or petrol scarifiers for large areas of grass or particularly stubborn lawns, as they offer high power without relying on the length of a power cable.

How to Use a Lawn Scarifier

Our scarifiers are easy to use and offer an easy solution to tidying up your lawn, which are best used in early spring or early autumn so the grass has time to recover while it’s still actively growing.

First, use your lawn mower to cut the grass to 1-2 inches in height which will help your scarifier work. Choose a day where the soil is slightly moist, but the grass is dry – it won’t work well on waterlogged lawns, but if your lawn is particularly dry it could cause issues!

Many scarifiers will have adjustable scarifying heights to suit your lawn, and it’s best to start it shallow before gradually increasing the depth for a thorough de-thatching! Start scarifying your lawn in strips, before going over it again in opposite directions if necessary.

Clear up any debris from scarifying your lawn and pop it in the compost bin – we love no waste! Go over your lawn with a garden fork or purpose-made aerator to improve soil compaction and strong root growth, before scattering a thin layer of top soil or compost to give the roots some nutrients. Then, you can scatter over grass seed to fill in any bare spots and bring your lawn back even thicker and lovelier than before. Water the lawn using your watering can or garden sprinkler to help it all get started, and top up with lawn feed every now and again to give your lawn a boost.
