What length extension cable should I choose?

You should always aim to choose extension cables that are the right length for your needs. While it might be tempting to choose the longest cable length, this could cause a trip hazard or get in the way if you actually only need to position the lead close to the outlet.

It can help to measure the distance from your plug socket to where you want the extension lead to sit – this will give you a good idea of what length of cable you should buy.

Are extension leads safe?

Extension leads are perfectly safe to use, but be careful not to overload them. You should only plug your extension cords directly into the wall socket – never add further extensions to an extension cable as this could cause a power outage or, in the worst case, an electrical fire.

Extension cords can also pose a trip hazard, so tie any excess cable together with a cable tie before securing it out of the way against the skirting board using a cable clip.

Do extension leads use electricity when not in use?

Extension leads use a very small amount of electricity, even when they’re not actively powering a device. If you’re concerned about your extension cable wasting electricity, simply unplug it when it’s not in use.
