How to make your home safe and securer

How secure is your home?

It’s a good idea to consider how well-protected your home is, whether you’re going on holiday or just leaving an empty house every day while you’re at work. We think it doesn’t hurt to have a bit of extra security, so take a walk around your home and ask yourself the following questions:

  • Can you see who’s outside your home when you’re not there?
  • Are the front and back doors secure?
  • Is the outside of your home well lit?
  • Is your shed or garage protected with a high-quality padlock?
  • Do you have any valuables around your home left on display

Outdoor lights for night-time

Outdoor lighting is the perfect way to let passers-by know that you're at home and you can see what's going on outside your house. With the nights drawing in it'll soon start getting dark by early evening, so we recommend keeping your outdoor areas well lit at all times.

Outdoor lights will make you and your family feel safer because they let outsiders know that the house is occupied and they give you the chance to see the areas outside your home, even in the dark. We have a huge range of outdoor lighting to give you that 'safe and secure' feeling. Whether it's flood lights or a subtle string of fairy lights, having outdoor lighting is a great addition to your home security. You could even jazz it up by using coloured lights!

Choose from our range of LED lights; they're so much more energy efficient - that’s a little win! Many of our lights are also solar powered, so the lights turn on automatically when it gets dark – another little win!

The wilko solar wall sensor light is perfect for installing right by your door. With its motion sensor, it will detect anyone by your doorway and light up, so you can see who it is. At just £5, it has over 50 five-star reviews, so why not give it a go!

Ding dong! Door bells and alarms

Make it easy for visitors to let you know when they arrive with our fab range of door chimes and door bells. From plug in door chimes, to electric door bells, we've even got door chimes with flashing lights to give you an added level of security.

As well as door chimes and door bells, the next step to a safer home is introducing alarms and sensors. Whether it’s the postman, your best friend or the whole family… It's always good to know when someone is at your front door. Not only will it help you feel more secure at home but you’ll also never miss a delivery again - that’s a little win!

Top tip: if you use a wilko portable plug-in door bell you can simply move it around so you can hear it chime from wherever it is you need to be... perfect for use around the home and garden. If you don’t have one already, invest in a smoke alarm. They're easy to install and can save you and your family’s lives, for as little as £6! If you do already have a smoke alarm be sure to check regularly that it's still working; as per the manufacturer's instructions.

Top tip – write a note in your calendar to do an alarm test on the first of every month, because we can all get forgetful when life gets busy! It’s also best to change the battery twice a year just to be on the safe side.

We think a good time to do it is when the clocks change; forward for daylight savings time and then back to standard time. These two events serve as a great reminder.

It's also a good idea to invest in a carbon monoxide alarm. These have a sensor which tests for Carbon Monoxide (CO) gas which can be deadly.

Keep it under lock and key

We think you'll agree, it's important to go to bed at night knowing that the doors are locked and secure so you can get cosy and sleep peacefully. There are multiple different types of locks that you can use in and around the house.

An additional security door bolt on the front door can add extra peace of mind.

Be sure outdoor buildings such as the shed and garage are safe too, with a trusty padlock to secure them. Look no further than our fantastic range of padlocks in different sizes, they're guaranteed to add an extra layer of security to your personal property. From TSA-certified locks to ones that allow you to change the combination, our padlocks are designed with ease of use and safety in mind. Top tip: remember to keep the key somewhere safe too!

Our range of door latches hold the key to all your security needs. Whether you're looking to replace an existing internal door latch or want to add extra security with a night latch lock, you'll find what you're after here.

Adding door locks to your home not only gives you added peace of mind, you'll also gain much needed privacy, particularly when adding smaller door bolts to internal doors... an essential for peace and quiet at bath-time!

For all your valuables, cash and keys, you can keep them securely stored with our great range of safes. From digital safes to lock safes, you can feel assured our safes will look after your belongings.

We've also got key minders that will keep your keys safe and secure, so you'll never have to worry about being locked out of your home.
