Early crops of deliciously sweet and crunchy pods up to 9cm (3in) long, are produced in easy to pick pairs. Plants need little support, growing to around 75cm (30in) tall and show good resistance to mildew for a longer harvest season and reliable, high yields. Pods can be eaten whole, ideal for fresh summer salads, in stir fries or as a side dish. Outdoor sowing: Sow in a prepared seed bed, in flat drills 15cm (6in) wide and 5cm (2in) deep. Sow in a zig-zag pattern along the drill allowing 5cm (2in) between seeds. Space drills 90cm (36in) apart. Cover with 5cm (2in) of fine soil. Firm gently and keep moist. Protect early sowings with cloches. Seedlings usually appear in 10-14 days. Protect younger plants from birds with twigs or netting. Provide support with pea sticks or netting for easier picking, especially in windy locations. Keep moist and weed free at all times. Pick regularly for the best yields. Harvest from May to August.
